Female Perspective

Mexico for example is known for its bright, brilliant colors found in architecture and natural landscape whether that is the cobalt blue sky against the turquoise sea,the multi-colored dancing skirts, orange  desert hills, or the golden  Aztec ruins. Murals help enhance the visual landscape by mimicking the beauty in its surroundings. Diego Rivera’s extensive murals for example  give Mexico  it’s historical charm and social context. Often murals reflect the traits of a community and give us a glimpse at its physical topography, past achievements and human socialization. In Canada, there are certain towns or cities which have dedicated a large amount of municipal and private funding to murals.  Chemainus, British Columbia  is known for the murals painted by Dan Sawatzky. The Village of Islington, Toronto is known for its murals by John Kuna and Sarah Collard. Several rural towns in Ontario are defined by their murals painted by John Hood and Allen C Hilgendorf. Winnipeg, Manitoba has a vast mural program with over 500 murals many of those were painted by Charlie Johnson and myself.  Each artist gives the community an individual style, making that area unique. Contemporary mural painting in North America, specifically Canada has been a way to help Artist’s succeed  in their profession by providing sustenance.

One of the main problems  throughout  history has been the ability to create funding for Artists and to provide ways for those funds to go directly to the artists. Mural  making is a way in which public,  municipal funding can be organized into a department which hires Artists to paint murals. There are several BIA (Business Improvement  Area) or BIZ (Business Improvement Zone) organizations who are funded by the city to plan programs which
